And Christ was adamant that a part of being Christian is to be a member of the church. It's good to pray by yourself, but we are also told to gather and seek out fellow believers.
Obviously you aren't going to think I've experienced the divine, since you jeer at Christ and don't view God as divine....well, at least you don't view the real god as divine. You're committed to your own vision. And as long as you are, your spirituality will be non-existent. Spirituality in any venue is about humility...and if you think you can create a functioning god by imagining him, while sneering at the real thing, you aren't going to get anywhere.
I think this has more to do with our innate personality traits than anything else.
Have you ever hit a place where you want to have faith, but you just can't quite get there?
I used to really be a very faithful and committed Christian. But, I was married to a pretty abusive guy who used my faith as a means to control and demean me, and I can't seem to get past that.
I basically lost faith in all of it, because it was used to damage me so much.
I went to church last night with my son, who is involved in a very progressive youth program locally, and absolutely loves it. The service was great, and it really touched me, to the point that I spent about half of it with tears running down my face, but I just can't get there. I just don't know if I buy the whole story about a guy named Jesus who died on the cross, or even really understand anymore what it means.
I mean, I understand on an intellectual level, because I taught Sunday School for about 12 years, but I don't understand it on an emotional level. There was a point in my life when I was just so damn beaten down by it all that I just threw it all in the rubbish bin and rebuilt my life from scratch.
And I miss the person that I used to be, before religion became a club in the hands of a person who used it to beat me every single day, but I don't know how to go backwards in time and reinvent my worldview.
The tears are God's way of letting you know he cares.
Faith is a choice. Christ said if we want to know if the doctrine is from the Father or not, we need to do it. The basics seem to be just start saying prayers. Ask the Lord for what you want. Share with Him your fears, desires, frustrations, joys, Express your gratitude to that which you are greatful. God will reveal Himself to you if you seek Him out.

There are plenty of people in the world who will tell you there is no God and the idea of religion is a crock. Seeing is believing they will tell you. Well, you can't see God but then again, you can't see the wind either BUT you can see the results of the wind and if you look hard enough, you can see evidence that God really does exist. I am not the world's finest Christian but I believe in God, and I know that without Him I would have died long ago because of situations I have found myself in. You have to have faith to believe in God. Without faith, a person can never believe God.
For me the question has been, since I was fairly young, can I live without faith? The answer seems to be "yes".
I have not believed in God for many, many years. And it follows that I don't believe in an afterlife. I have wrestled, quietly, with the knowledge that one day my life will end and my consciousness will cease and that's all she wrote. I admit at times it's kept me awake at night. At times it has put me in a depressive mood, contemplating the end of all things for me. But not much I can do about it.
If you are a person of faith then good luck to you. I have no problem with people of faith. I have a hell of a time with the jive artists, hucksters. perverts, sadists and sickos that hide under their faith like a shield from justice. If you're one of them then you can get stuffed.
Wrong. And when I say wrong, to correct what you just said, I mean YOU are wrong.
I have not rejected God. As I said before, I believe in God.
What I reject is the archaic system of religious beliefs that have grown up and around that which we simply do not and cannot actually know.
God may very well judge me. All I am saying is that I do not believe YOUR religious notion that He will judge me on the BASIS of the things YOU say He will.
I think this is where we disagree. I don't believe that we do not and cannot actually know. God is all powerful. He is all knowing. It's a simple thing for Him to make His will known to man. Who are we to resist Him when He does?
I can promise you and everyone else that He is willing to reveal Himself to you line upon line and precept upon precept. We just sometimes have to start the search in the dark, moving forward step by step before we see the pathe clearly before us.
I think God will have mercy on many of us. I think the question is will we have mercy on ourselves.
First, it's simply untrue that I want the warm fuzzies without doing anything. I try to live my life by Matthew 25:31-46 and Hosea 6:8.
But, I am not going to give lip service to dogma that I consider illogical and created by humans to give themselves more power over other humans. Controlling other people doesn't interest me. It's typically a behavior exercised by people who themselves lack control over their lives and circumstances and personal conduct.
That isn't me, so it doesn't appeal.
As for God, bear in mind that your view of god was created up by a succession of humans who wrote down their perspectives and views, which you now parrot.
I have to wonder if you've ever even really experienced the divine, apart from reading about him/her in a book.
I dont think God expects us to give lip service to dogma or lip service to anything. He wants us to sincerely follow Him and seek Him out. He will then teach us His truth's when we are prepared for them and as we live them in faith. He does not expect us to run before we can walk.
